Semaema was born in Fiji and honed her skills as a singer in the local church choir. Her passion for singing became her refuge. Orphaned at a young age, Semaema found solace in the songs she sang and music has been a vital part of her life. Adopted at 10 years of age to an Australian family, Semaema studied Music through to her HSC scoring 94 in the subject and was nominated for Encore. At 13 years old she was diagnosed with Lupus Nephritis which has since hindered her from pursuing her career. Now on dialysis 3 times a week, Semaema is waiting for a life-saving kidney transplant.
In 2012, Semaema was given the opportunity to perform on the Australian version of the music talent show X Factor, performing U2’s hit song One in front of four amazing judges; Mel B, Natalie Bassingthwaite, Ronan Keating, and Guy Sebastian. She made it through the audition, and in the process inspired both the X Factor judges and audience alike with her story of courage, strength, and determination.
Semaema is also a committed Christian, with her favourite verses being Jeremiah 29:11-14, which resonate strongly with her personal journey.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”
